Once again, we get behind the wheel and get ready to take another spectacular journey on the great highways of the world. And we start our epic road trip in Asia with the Karakoram Highway, which traverses a journey between China and Pakistan.
Karakoram Highway – China / Pakistan
This eight hundred miles Asian road stretches from the Xinjiang region in China right to the very north of Pakistan. In fact this wonderful highway is one of the very highest paved roads that can be found on the planet. The Karakoram Highway took twenty years to complete and at its highest point is reaches up to the sky almost five thousand meters. Needless to say, over such a wild landscape the mighty highway crosses through some of the toughest terrain there is. It even passes through the immense Karakoram Mountains following a route that was favored by the merchants on the ancient Silk Road.
Strada Statale 163 – Italy
This magnificent European road takes in the UNESCO listed Amalfi Coast which is actually a World-Heritage area. This highly picturesque highway starts in the historic city of Salerno and continues on its long and winding way along the Sorrento Peninsula.
To drive along this treacherous highway is an absolute treat but only for drivers with nerves of steel. On one side are towering mountains and cliffs, while on the other is the azure Mediterranean deep down below. The scenic route passes small hilltop towns and picturesque villages painted in delicate pastel colors such as Positano and Amalfi.
Tianmen Mountain Road – China
If you really want to experience a mountain drive, then the Tianmen Mountain Road in China will tick all the boxes. The road is only six miles long, but like a featherweight boxer it packs a mighty punch. In just six miles the highway rises eleven hundred meters.
This road has often been called the Heaven-Linking Avenue, as it is considered by the local mountain people as the gateway to heaven situated at the Tianmen Cave. This road is one of the most dangerous in the world as it is littered with hairpin bends, in fact there are almost one hundred of them.
The Great Ocean Road – Australia
The Great Ocean Road is a hundred and fifty miles long of beautiful coast road in one of the most scenic routes of Australia. This magnificent highway was actually built by Australian soldiers who finally completed it in 1932, and it is now part of Australia’s National Heritage List.
The Great Ocean Road is often enjoyed by day trippers and tourists to enjoy its magnificent scenic views. As well as terrific sea views it passes through grand sights such as the Great Otway National Park with its breathtaking waterfalls and magnificent limestone stacks such as the Twelve Apostles. These magnificent roads stand as a testament to man’s ingenuity, and the very fact that they could be constructed in some of the most inhospitable parts of the world is quite incredible.
